There was a lot to say. Dante was not entirely surprised to find out that Marcus knew none of it. Why would Whitaker, who was also responsible for Marcus being on the base, want to share the struggle that he’d had with the wolf shifters and even with one of the dragons? It would be horrible for morale.

In the wild, wolves and bears more or less kept to themselves. It had been the same on the base. For all the extra security getting in, most people inside hadn’t even been told. That was good information for Dante to have.

Marcus, meanwhile, looked a little bit like he’d been slugged in the gut. Hard. Dante sympathized. This had to be a lot of information to take in, but Marcus should at least know Dante well enough to know he would tell the truth. Besides, bears had a keen sense of smell, and Marcus would easily be able to tell if Dante were lying just by his scent.

The man sat for awhile, and Dante let him. The bear shifter’s green eyes were confused as he tried to put what he’d learned about his boss into perspective. It couldn’t be easy learning that he was working for a company that cared so little about shifters that they were willing to use them as lab rats to try to empower humans.

“I’ll need to think about this,” Marcus said. “Until then, you should know two things. First, I’ll keep your secret, and I’ll talk to the other bears to ask them to do the same. Second, Whitaker isn’t here. He hasn’t been for at least a few days.”

Dante’s eyes widened. Shit. Shit shit shit. Somehow, he hadn’t expected that, though maybe he should have. This whole thing had been pulled together very quickly, but the truth was, there was no way that they could have known. They had been working off of no information, and part of why Dante was here was to get this sort of thing.

Whitaker gone. Damn it. Now Dante was going to have to figure out more.

Marcus knew, maybe. Until the bear had figured out what side he was on, though, it was doubtful that he’d say anything. Dante knew Marcus was a good man, but he also knew that his stubbornness was legendary and that he would need to make his own mind up about everything.

“I’ll speak to the others,” the bear shifter promised, and though Dante was impatient, though he wanted more than anything to get back to Cory. He was sure that his mate was pregnant, and he needed to be back with him to help him through that.

Still, there was no rushing this. Dante would just have to be patient, and meanwhile, he had to find out what he could find out about just where that asshole Whitaker had gone.
